Salmon Forest - Ralf Kiefner

In summer the Pacific Salmon embark in a struggling migration. After roaming the vast ocean for most of their lives they follow their instinct and return to the rivers, where they were born, to spawn.

Always moving forward and never giving up whatever the dangers are. This way they sacrifice their lives in order to fill not only the rivers with new life, but also the forest and the sea.

They produce such a surplus of nutrients that even humpback whales, which need enormous quantities of food, take here just a few months to consume all they require for a whole year.

However, this nature paradise fragile. Each individual component, seemingly insignificant on their own, interacts with others to the benefit of all. Even the smallest imbalance, or the removal of just one tiny component, could endanger, perhaps even destroy the entire ecosystem.

Andrea Ramalho and Ralf Kiefner have worked on this documentary for 3 years (each year for 5 weeks). They have produced the documentary on their own costs.

Three different versions of Salmon Forest are available: Salmon Forest (English version), Lachswald (German version), La Forêt de Saumons (French version).
